For many riders, earSHIELD 2 is the best place to start. earSHIELD 2 and earSHIELD Pro are not conventional size options; their main differences are their construction and intended use. Overall, the difference is small: earSHIELD 2 is slightly smaller, lighter and less expensive thanks to a newer production process. earSHIELD Pro is slightly larger, has additional reinforcing strips and a more voluminous wool surface that is fluffed up during production. The reinforcing strips can be useful if the helmet strap sits slightly away from the head, is relatively loose, changes position or if you want to optimise the effect as much as possible.
earSHIELD mini is the particularly compact polyamide model, while earSHIELD Classic is the proven original with a longer shape.
Before comparing the models, however, one other question matters most: does the attachment principle suit your bike helmet?
The most important requirement: the position of the helmet strap
earSHIELD attaches to the helmet strap in front of the ear. The strap should lie close to the head in this area so that the wind deflector can sit close enough to the head. Performance can vary depending on ear shape, helmet, chin strap position, speed and wind direction.
Put your helmet on as you wear it when riding and close the chin strap. Then look at the area directly in front of your ear. If you are still genuinely unsure after using this comparison, you can optionally send a photo of the helmet being worn, taken from a front-side angle with the chin strap closed, to support@ear-shield.com.
The four models compared
| Model | Character and main difference | Material | Dimensions per side | Weight per side |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| earSHIELD 2 | Current model; slightly smaller and lighter, and less expensive thanks to the newer production process | 60% polyamide, 40% wool | approx. 5.2 × 6.7 cm | approx. 5 g |
| earSHIELD Pro | Slightly larger; additional reinforcing strips and a more voluminous, fluffed wool surface | Sheep wool outside, polyamide inside | approx. 5.5 × 7.0 cm | approx. 7 g |
| earSHIELD mini | Particularly compact polyamide model | Weather-resistant polyamide | approx. 4.9 × 6.5 cm | approx. 8 g |
| earSHIELD Classic | Proven original model with a longer shape | Weather-resistant polyamide | approx. 6.5 × 6.4 cm | approx. 9 g |
All specifications refer to one side. Each product is supplied as one pair, meaning two pieces.
earSHIELD 2: the lightweight all-rounder
earSHIELD 2 is the current everyday model and the most sensible starting point for many helmets. It is generally sufficient when the helmet straps lie close to the head and run relatively close in front of the ears. You can further improve the fit by carefully adjusting the profile of the rear edge to the individual shape of your head. The sheep wool outer surface supports even airflow, while the inner structure and fastening are made from polyamide. At approximately 5 grams per side, it is slightly lighter than earSHIELD Pro. The newer production process also allows earSHIELD 2 to be offered at a lower price.
A particularly good fit if you:
- have a helmet strap that lies close to the head and runs relatively close in front of the ear,
- want an especially lightweight and affordable model with sheep wool.
earSHIELD Pro: with additional reinforcing strips
earSHIELD Pro differs only slightly from earSHIELD 2. It is a little larger and has additional reinforcing strips. These stabilise the profile, enhance the effect and can help keep the wind deflector closer to the head. This is particularly useful when the helmet strap sits slightly away from the head, is relatively loose, changes position or runs farther in front of the ear because of a wide Y-strap divider. The wool surface of earSHIELD Pro is also fluffed up during production and is therefore more voluminous than that of earSHIELD 2. If the strap position is unclear, or if the best possible stability and wind reduction are your priority, earSHIELD Pro is therefore the more robust choice. The supporting inner side is made from polyamide.
A particularly good fit if you:
- have a helmet strap that sits away from the head, is relatively loose or changes position,
- want the reinforcing strips for the best possible stability and wind reduction.
earSHIELD mini: compact and made from polyamide
earSHIELD mini is the smallest model in the family. It is made from weather-resistant polyamide and sits compactly in front of the ear. Unlike earSHIELD Classic, its rear edge has a special synthetic fur material with fibres approximately four millimetres long to reduce turbulence along this edge. It is a good choice for anyone who prefers the smallest possible shape and a model without a wool surface.
A particularly good fit if you:
- want a particularly compact shape,
- prefer polyamide to sheep wool.
earSHIELD Classic: the proven original
earSHIELD Classic is the original model in the product family. It is made from weather-resistant polyamide and has a longer, classic shape. It remains a solid option for anyone who prefers the proven original concept.
A particularly good fit if you:
- want the original earSHIELD model,
- prefer a longer shape.
Decide with four short questions
- Does your helmet strap lie close to the head, run relatively close in front of the ear, and do you want the more affordable and slightly lighter model? Start with earSHIELD 2.
- Does your helmet strap sit slightly away from the head, fit loosely, change position or run farther in front of the ear because of a wide Y-strap divider? earSHIELD Pro is the more robust choice.
- Do you want the most compact option without a wool surface? Take a look at earSHIELD mini.
- Do you prefer the proven original model with a longer shape? earSHIELD Classic is likely to suit your needs best.
Frequently asked questions about choosing a model
Which model is currently recommended?
For many customers, earSHIELD 2 is the best starting point. It is lightweight, compact and attaches easily to the helmet strap with hook-and-loop fastening. The individual fit of the helmet remains important.
How big is the difference between earSHIELD 2 and earSHIELD Pro?
The difference is small. They are not simply two conventional size options. earSHIELD 2 is slightly smaller, lighter and less expensive because of the newer production process. earSHIELD Pro is slightly larger, has additional reinforcing strips and a more voluminous wool surface. The reinforcing strips are particularly useful when the helmet strap sits slightly away from the head, is relatively loose, changes position or runs farther in front of the ear because of a wide Y-strap divider.
Does earSHIELD Pro always reduce airflow more than earSHIELD 2?
That cannot be guaranteed in every case. The reinforcing strips of earSHIELD Pro can be particularly helpful when the helmet strap sits slightly farther away from the head or is relatively loose, because they can help position the wind deflector closer to the head. With a close-fitting strap, earSHIELD 2 may already be the more suitable and affordable choice.
Are earSHIELD 2 and earSHIELD Pro made entirely from wool?
No. Both models combine a sheep wool outer surface with a supporting structure or inner side made from polyamide. Overall, earSHIELD 2 consists of 60% polyamide and 40% wool.
Which model is the smallest?
At approximately 4.9 × 6.5 cm per side, earSHIELD mini is the most compact model.
Can I get advice if I am still very unsure?
Yes. If you are still genuinely unsure after using this comparison, you can optionally send a photo of the helmet being worn, taken from a front-side angle with the chin strap closed, to support@ear-shield.com. A photo cannot provide a binding fit guarantee, but it can often help with a general assessment.
